Rays decline deal for Hermida
Marlins reportedly wanted pair of pitching prospects in return
By Bill Chastain / MLB.com
According to the report, the Marlins gave the Rays a list of pitching prospects they were interested in and the option of picking two of them. But the Rays did not find a match.
Hermida has long been on Tampa Bay's radar, but he is hardly the only player the club has interest in acquiring to improve its offense. The Rays have already met with free agents Milton Bradley and Jason Giambi, and they could be meeting with free-agent outfielder Bobby Abreu before they leave Las Vegas. In addition, they have interest in free-agent outfielder Ken Griffey Jr., and they are rumored to be interested in trading for Cardinals outfielder Rick Ankiel.
Tampa Bay has a surplus of pitching prospects, including Jeff Niemann, Mitch Talbot, Wade Davis, David Price and Jake McGee. In addition, Rays starters Andy Sonnanstine and Edwin Jackson have been the most talked about possibilities to be traded.
