Angels have interest in landing Peavy
Club exploring options in attempt to trade for Padres' ace righty
By Lyle Spencer / MLB.com
A club official labeled it a "long shot" on his way home to Southern California, but the two clubs will continue to discuss names and see if they can come up with the right combination of players for a dominant right-hander who would give the American League West champions a rotation perhaps unmatched in Major League Baseball.
The Padres are believed to be seeking infielder Brandon Wood and pitchers Nick Adenhart and Kevin Jepsen in a package for Peavy, a 27-year-old right-hander who has $63 million left over four years on his contract.
As the Meetings were closing down, so was the complicated, multi-club deal the Padres and Cubs were trying to cobble together.
Peavy, the 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner, has the contractual right to veto a deal and prefers to remain in the NL. But the Angels are geographically desirable -- Angel Stadium is a one-hour commute from Peavy's home in San Diego County -- and the intensely competitive Mobile, Ala., native yearns to pitch for a contender.
