Yankees non-tender Britton, Christian
Right-handed pitcher, outfielder become free agents
By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com
Teams can choose not to tender contracts to their arbitration-eligible players at any point prior to Friday's midnight ET deadline.
The Yankees' roster was reduced to 38 with Friday's moves, pending the additions of free-agent right-handers CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett. Both pitchers have agreed to the terms of their respective deals, but neither has been finalized.
Britton, 25, had a 5.09 ERA in 15 relief appearances over seven stints with the Yankees in 2008, and he also made 21 appearances for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he was 3-1 with a 2.28 ERA. He was acquired by the Yankees in December 2006 from the Orioles for right-hander Jaret Wright and cash considerations.
Christian, 28, hit .250 (10-for-40) with three doubles and six RBIs in 24 games over two stints with the Yankees in '08. Signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2004, Christian made his Major League debut on June 24 and made 10 outfield starts for New York this season. He batted .306 with six home runs and 45 RBIs in 74 games for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
