"It looks worse than it is," Hawpe said with a smile.
Hawpe received four stitches after being accidentally stepped on and spiked on a play at second base during Friday's game with the Angels. Thanks in part to an unusually long Spring Training, Hawpe doesn't expect the injury to delay him for the start of the regular season. But it did knock him off Team USA for the World Baseball Classic.
Hawpe said he didn't suffer any damage to tendons and ligaments, although he was headed for a follow-up exam with the Rockies' training staff.
"It could have been a lot worse than it was," said Hawpe, who said he had never before been cut that deeply with spikes.
The Rockies said that Hawpe can return to complete baseball activity in five to seven days. He was to leave this weekend to join Team USA.
"I wanted to represent my country, but this is part of the game," Hawpe said. "There's nothing you can do about it. It'll keep me out of the WBC, but I can stay here with the team.
"But there's still five weeks to go until the regular season starts. That's a lot of games."
