Lugo back in camp after knee surgery

Red Sox shortstop could be ready for game action by mid-April

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Ten days removed from right knee surgery, Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo returned to camp on Friday, encouraged by the way his recovery has progressed.

"It's been going well," said Lugo. "I feel better than how I thought I was going to be. It's only been a week, and I don't have too much swelling in there. We're doing good."

Lugo has no doubt now that the original timetable he was given at the time of surgery was accurate, and he envisions himself being back in the lineup in short order.

"Hopefully, in three weeks I'll be ready," Lugo said. "Probably three or four weeks, I'll be fine."

Under that timetable, Lugo might be permitted to return to action at some point during Boston's second homestand, which goes from April 17-26. He will miss at least the first nine games of the regular season.

What is Lugo up to these days?

"I'm riding the bike, I threw today, and I'm doing some exercises, the elliptical [and] some squats," Lugo said.

He expects a steady progression.

"We're going to see how we feel," Lugo said. "This is the first week. Next week I'll hit off the tee and go outside and start doing some light running and see how it feels."

Lugo is curious to see how his range of motion and mobility are once his rehab is complete.

"When something happens, you never know how it's going to react. We've got to get it strong and see how it feels," Lugo said.

As for the shortstop competition with Jed Lowrie, Lugo doesn't want to contemplate that during his rehab.

"I don't worry about that stuff," said Lugo. "When I'm ready to play, then we'll talk about it. Everything's good."

Before the injury, Lugo was having a strong camp, hitting .450 (9-for-20).
