Mets add Takahashi to their bullpen
Fossum designated for assignment after finale loss
By Marty Noble / MLB.com
Veteran reliever Ken Takahashi was added to the 40-man and the big leagues rosters an hour after the Mets' 8-1 loss to the Nationals and after the club designated left-handed reliever Casey Fossum for assignment.
Takahashi, 39 and left-handed, was signed to a Minor League contract on March 31 after being released by the Blue Jays. He had played the previous 14 years with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp. He had a 66-87 record in 433 games, 160 starts.
Takahashi has appeared in six games with the Mets' Triple-A Buffalo affiliate, producing a 0.77 ERA in 11 2/3 innings. He allowed 10 hits and six walks and struck out nine. The Mets are likely to need a second left-handed setup reliever -- in addition to Pedro Feliciano -- when they play the Phillies next weekend.
Fossum had appeared in three games with the Mets, including their loss on Sunday.
