Abbamondi preps for Draft appearance

Assistant general manager to represent Cards on June 9

ST. LOUIS -- Assistant general manager John Abbamondi will have a much different view on his second First-Year Player Draft with the Cardinals than he did in year one.

Abbamondi, in his second year as a member of the club's front office, will represent St. Louis at the Draft on June 9, rather than staying back in St. Louis and being a part of the "war room." Many teams are sending former players or managers to represent them at baseball's annual First-Year Player Draft, but St. Louis is sticking with members of its staff.

Along with Abbamondi, Joe Rigoli will attend and represent the Redbirds. Rigoli is a pro scout for St. Louis.

St. Louis selects 19th in the first round of the 2009 Draft. The Cardinals selected Arizona State infielder Brett Wallace with their first pick in 2008, following shortstop Pete Kozma (2007), right-handed pitcher Adam Ottavino in 2006 and outfielder Colby Rasmus in 2005.

MLB.com will offer live coverage and analysis of the entire First-Year Player Draft from June 9-11. The MLB Network will broadcast the first round beginning at 5 p.m. CT on June 9 from its Studio 42 in Secaucus, N.J., and those 32 selections also will be simulcast live on MLB.com.

Beginning with the 33rd pick, up-to-the-minute on-air coverage from the remaining rounds will shift exclusively to MLB.com/Live, where host Vinny Micucci will be joined by MLB.com Draft expert Jonathan Mayo and Major League Scouting Bureau director Frank Marcos.

Once the first night is done, the Draft will continue with the rounds 4-30, via conference call from MLB Headquarters in New York, at 11 a.m. CT on Wednesday, June 10. Rounds 31-50 will be on Thursday, June 11, starting at 10:30 a.m. CT.
