Sheffield to play with sore right knee
Mets slugger doesn't have MRI, will return to outfield Friday
By Alden Gonzalez / MLB.com
The Mets said Sheffield will return to manning the outfield when the club gets back to National League rules in a home game against the Rays on Friday, The Post added.
Sheffield said Saturday he has been bothered by pain behind the knee since May and was expecting to have an MRI on Monday. Manager Jerry Manuel agreed and said the 40-year-old's playing status would be questionable beyond the three-game Interleague series at Baltimore that starts Tuesday.
But it looks like that's been resolved.
Sheffield, batting .270 with seven home runs and 24 RBIs in 52 games, homered while serving as the designated hitter against the Yankees on Friday and Saturday. He is expected to continue in that role against the Orioles.
