Tosoni to play for World at Futures Game

Prospect will represent Twins in Minor League showcase

MILWAUKEE -- Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, Jason Kubel, Francisco Liriano, and Matt Tolbert are among the current Twins who were selected to take part in the Futures Game during their Minor League careers.

So Twins Minor League outfielder Rene Tosoni, who was selected to play for the World Team in this year's Futures Game in July, is certainly in good company in earning the honor.

The 11th annual XM All-Star Futures Game, pitting the best Minor League prospects from the United States against the best from the rest of the world, will be held at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on All-Star Sunday, July 12, at 1 p.m. CT. MLB.com will provide complete coverage before, during and after the game, which can be seen live on ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD and followed live on Gameday.

After missing a little over three months of the 2008 season at Class A Fort Myers due to a left foot fracture, Tosoni has been putting up solid numbers in his first year up with Double-A New Britain. He's batting .262 with 11 doubles, nine home runs and 42 RBIs through his first 65 games with the Rock Cats.

The outfielder started off slow in April, hitting just .180, but rebounded in May when he batted .323 with six doubles, five home runs and 20 RBIs in 30 games for New Britain. The nine home runs are already a career high for the outfielder. His previous high had been three, which he hit in 2007 for rookie league Elizabethton.

A native of Toronto, Ontario, Tosoni is one of three Canadians on this year's World roster. Since being selected as a 36th-round pick of the Twins in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, Tosoni has continued to rise through the club's farm system.
