Hamels, wife to host fundraiser Monday

Celebrity poker event to raise money for lefty's foundation

PHILADELPHIA -- Cole Hamels won't be playing in the All-Star Game next week at Busch Stadium, but he will be in St. Louis.

The Hamels Foundation is hosting Batter Up, a celebrity poker invitational at The Flamingo Bowl in St. Louis on Monday at 10 p.m. ET. The event also includes a live auction, silent auction, bowling, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.

Fans interested in attending the event can purchase tickets at thehamelsfoundation.org.

Hamels said he chose St. Louis as the foundation's first major event partially because his wife, Heidi, is from Missouri. Proceeds benefit The Hamels Foundation, which is dedicated to providing support for quality education in the United States and establishing a school in Malawi, Africa.

"We want to help education in Africa, education in the United States and help curb the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Malawi," Hamels said.

Actors Billy Bob Thornton and Tony Shalhoub and others are a few of the celebrities who could attend, along with Major Leaguers in town for the All-Star Game next Tuesday.
