In the premiere episode, Costas and Selig will discuss umpiring, stadium ticket prices, competitive balance, scheduling, performance-enhancing drugs, and former Major League player and manager Pete Rose, who is suspended from baseball.
MLB Network launched Jan. 1, and in its charter year it has become a way of life for fans in about 54 million households who enjoy its 24/7/365 presence. Selig greeted viewers when MLB Network first went on the air, leading into the debut of "Studio 42 with Bob Costas," which featured an interview with Don Larsen and Yogi Berra interspersed throughout a historic re-airing of Larsen's 1956 World Series perfect game.
"'Studio 42' gives us the time and the setting to do justice to a wide variety of baseball subjects," Costas said. "Some are topical and journalistic; others are appreciations of the game and its history. Either way, it's great to be able to cover baseball this way."
Other interviews throughout the season featured former St. Louis Cardinals teammates Bob Gibson and Tim McCarver, St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Joe Torre, author and former New York Yankees pitcher Jim Bouton, and former Major League Baseball umpires Don Denkinger, Bruce Froemming and Steve Palermo.
"Whether he's discussing the latest headlines in baseball with the Commissioner or recalling some of the great moments in the game's history with Larsen and Berra, Bob's deep passion for the game of baseball is apparent in every interview he conducts in Studio 42," said Tony Petitti, president and chief executive officer of MLB Network. "The first season of 'Studio 42 with Bob Costas' let us showcase some of the biggest names and stories in baseball, and we're excited to continue to give fans an in-depth look at some of the game's most important stories from today and from its history."
As a prelude to the Commissioner's appearance, MLB Network was airing a replay of the Yankees' 11-inning victory over the Twins in the American League Division Series Game 2 (starting at 2 p.m.), followed by "Epic Moments" at 6 p.m., followed by an MLB Network Special in which Costas sits down with Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. at 7 p.m.
