Twins recall Manship, option Plouffe

PHILADELPHIA -- The Twins recalled right-handed pitcher Jeff Manship from Triple-A Rochester and optioned infielder Trevor Plouffe before Saturday's game against the Phillies.

The move was necessary, considering the Twins used five relievers in Friday's 9-5 loss.

"We needed somebody who could pitch," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He was doing fine. He knows how to pitch backwards."

Manship was 3-3 with a 4.43 ERA in 12 starts for Rochester. In 65 innings, he allowed 83 hits, and 32 earned runs, while striking out 51 and walking just 15.

Manship made two appearances for the Twins this season -- one as a spot starter and one in a relief effort -- with a 2.45 ERA.

Plouffe was hitting just .130 in limited playing time after being called up earlier this season when shortstop J.J. Hardy got hurt.

"Plouffe needs to play," Gardenhire said. "He needs to get some more swings in."
