Padres claim infielder Hoffpauir from Jays

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres claimed infielder Jarrett Hoffpauir off waivers from the Blue Jays on Wednesday and designated catcher Chris Stewart for assignment.

The 27-year-old Hoffpauir hit .295 with 16 home runs and 73 RBIs with a .376 on-base percentage and a .494 slugging percentage for Triple-A Las Vegas in 2010.

Hoffpauir also hit .206 in 34 at-bats with the Blue Jays.

Hoffpauir can play second and third base and is a line-drive hitter who doesn't strike out much. He hit .249 away from Cashman Field in Las Vegas, which is regarded as one of the most hitter-friendly ballparks in the Pacific Coast League.

Hoffpauir, a sixth-round pick of the Cardinals in 2004, hit for the cycle twice in 2010 for Las Vegas. He hit .250 in a 12 at-bat stint with the Cardinals in 2009.

Stewart, 28, signed a Minor League contract with the Padres last December. He appeared in two games defensively in September after hitting .248 with seven home runs and 39 RBIs for Triple-A Portland this season.
