Pierzynski growing mustache for charity

But regardless of the reaction to his first foray into this particular area of facial hair, Pierzynski knows the endeavor is for a good cause.
As part of Movember's month-long fundraiser for prostate and testicular cancer awareness, Pierzynski took on the mustache-growing challenge. Fans of the free-agent catcher, the White Sox or simply facial hair can take a look at Pierzynski's progress at the Movember website, searching for Pierzynski's team, and can donate to the cause. They can also grow their own mustaches to pick up donations.
"People will get a good chuckle, but it's for a good cause so I can't complain," said Pierzynski, whose team has raised almost $6,750 in pledges as of Saturday "to change the face of men's health," as his page states. "The whole point is to get people to ask about it and donate -- a dollar, a quarter, anything is fine. It's just a way to get it out there."
Pierzynski said he did a full shave on Nov. 1, as the Movember program dictates, and said the mustache already was starting to come in after just a couple of days. And for every person who makes a comical remark on the new look or simply checks out Team Pierzynski, hopefully the corresponding donation will follow.
"Oh, yeah. I'll get a good laugh out of the comments," Pierzynski said. "That's what it's for. The more comments, the better. People are checking it out.
"We are fortunate to have the job we have. It's an awesome position to be in to be able to support something you believe in like this, which is huge for all males to worry about, and a good cause. Spread the wealth, as the saying goes. My buddy brought this up last year, and we're trying to get people interested."
