Freeman enjoys relaxing day off in DC

WASHINGTON -- When Freddie Freeman awoke Friday, he continued a tradition that dates back to when the Braves selected him in the second round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft.

"I talk to my dad every day," Freeman said. "It doesn't matter. I've called him every day since I signed. It doesn't matter if it's an off-day or we're having a game."

After catching up with his father and talking about how he had felt while playing in his first Major League Opening Day game the day before, Freeman met his good friend Jason Heyward to spend the afternoon at a mall that Martin Prado and a few of their Braves teammates were visiting.

"It was kind of like a team shopping day," Freeman said.

Freeman appreciated the opportunity to experience his first Opening Day amid the pageantry presented at Nationals Stadium Thursday afternoon. After going hitless in three at-bats during the Braves' 2-0 win over the Nationals, he expressed some of the excitement he had felt.

But by the time he awoke Friday to enjoy the first off-day of the season, the 21-year-old Freeman was ready to relax.

"I really didn't think about [Opening Day]," Freeman said. "I went shopping with Jason, got dinner with Hicksy [Brandon Hicks] and then watched TV. It was a lot of fun. I just took it all in, rested and got ready for today."
