With Beckett sick, Aceves to start Tuesday

BOSTON -- The invaluable Alfredo Aceves will again resurface in a starting role on Tuesday night, as ace Josh Beckett has been pushed back to a date to be announced because of illness.

What is Beckett dealing with?

"I fall back on intestinal turmoil," said manager Terry Francona said after the Red Sox's 14-5 win over the Padres. "To be honest with you, he hasn't felt good the last couple of days. He was going to go home and see if he felt better. The more we were thinking about it, before he got out of here, we said, 'You know what? This is silly. If you're that sick, you're kind of worried about pitching tomorrow.' I'm not sure how good he'd feel anyway. So we stayed away from Aceves [on Monday]."

Aceves' last four appearances have been out of the bullpen. However, he remains stretched out. Two of those outings were 3 2/3 innings or more.

The righty has made three starts, going 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA.

"He's done a real good job whether he's been in relief or starting," said Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek. "Day in and day out, he's done a real good job. He's got the stuff. He's just got to execute his pitches."

The Red Sox have a scheduled off-day on Thursday, so they have some flexibility regarding when to move Beckett back into the rotation. The last time the righty pitched was at Tropicana Field on June 15, when he fired a one-hit shutout against the Rays.
