Umpires overturn Schumaker non-catch
By Corey Brock / MLB.com
With Placido Polanco on first base with one out in the ninth in a game the Phillies led by two and then won, 3-2, Carlos Ruiz lined a pitch to center field that Schumaker closed in on quickly before diving to make what appeared to be a catch on replays.
But right-field umpire Jerry Meals ruled that Schumaker had trapped the ball instead of making the catch. Schumaker complained immediately to Meals.
The umpires then huddled briefly before Layne overturned the call, sending Polanco back to first base. St. Louis closer Jason Motte then stuck out Phillies closer Ryan Madson to end the threat and the inning.
"I came up and saw whoever had popped off first [Polanco] and had gone halfway, so I came up to throw, because I knew I had caught it," Schumaker said. "It got a little heated [with Meals]. It was a big moment.
"But they got together and got it right, and that's the main thing."
