Schumaker exits Game 5 with oblique injury
By Corey Brock / MLB.com
"[He] probably had the best two at-bats on our ballclub against [Phillies Game 5 starter Roy Halladay]," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "But he pulled an oblique ... so we had to remove him."
Schumaker was replaced defensively in the third by Jon Jay after lining out to Phillies left fielder Raul Ibanez in the top of the inning.
The Cardinals were leading at the time, 1-0, thanks to Schumaker's RBI double in the first inning.
Schumaker appeared to be favoring his right side as he left the dugout for the visiting clubhouse at Citizens Bank Park.
"I've been pulled out of two games in my life and they happened to be playoff games," Schumaker said the Cardinals' 1-0 victory. "I'm not happy about it, especially probably the biggest game I've ever played in. But it wasn't any time to be a hero. We had other guys who could come in."Schumaker, who has appeared at second base and center field in the series, finished the NLDS hitting .600 (6-for-10).
Jay was 2-for-11 in the first four games of the series.
