Olt, Solis are AFL's Players of the Week

Slugger leads in homers, RBIs, while lefty fans nine in four frames

PHOENIX -- Surprise third baseman Mike Olt (TEX) and Scottsdale left-handed starting pitcher Sammy Solis (WAS) are the Arizona Fall League's week five Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Player of the Week
The 23-year-old Olt hit .571 (8-for-14) last week with one double, two home runs, eight RBIs and five walks to lead Surprise to a 4-1 week as the 20-7 (.738) Saguaros chase the Arizona Fall League single-season winning percentage record of .705 (31-13), set in 1999 by the Mesa Solar Sox.

Last Friday, Olt registered six RBIs against Peoria to equal teammate and fellow third baseman Matt Dominguez (FLA) for the 2011 league single-game high.

Olt also is the author of three two-homer games.

A first-round compensation Draft choice (49th overall) in 2010 out of the University of Connecticut, Olt has been one of the Fall League's top offensive performers through the season's first five weeks. He leads the league in home runs (8) and slugging percentage (.705), shares the lead in RBIs (30) with Salt River third baseman Nolan Arenado (COL), sits tied for third in total bases (55), and is tied for fourth in extra-base hits (12).

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Branford, Conn. native hit .267 with 14 home runs and 42 RBIs in 69 games for Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach in 2011.

Pitcher of the Week
The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Solis won his only start last week, hurling four impressive innings that included a 2011 league single-game-best nine strikeouts against Phoenix last Friday. He allowed three hits and walked three in the outing.

The two-time Fall Leaguer, who also pitched for last year's champion Scorpions, ranks second in strikeouts (23) and is tied for third in innings pitched (23).

In his last two starts, the former University of San Diego star, who graduated from Agua Fria High School in Avondale, Ariz., has fanned 14 batters and allowed no earned runs over eight innings.

Solis split his 2011 season between Class A Hagerstown (2-1, 4.02 ERA) and Class A Advanced Potomac (6-2, 2.72 ERA). In two professional seasons, Solis sports an 8-3 record and 3.13 ERA in 19 games with 96 strikeouts in 100 1/3 innings pitched.

Other Nominees
Phoenix OF Grant Green (OAK), Peoria IF Jedd Gyorko (SD), Scottsdale OF Bryce Harper (WSH), LHP Danny Hultzen (SEA), Peoria LHP Tyler Lyons (STL) and Surprise OF Kevin Mattison (FLA) also were nominated.

Arizona Fall League

This year's schedule featured the sixth annual Rising Stars Game, Nov. 5 at Surprise Stadium, the United Concordia Dental Military Appreciation Game on Friday, Nov. 11, and the annual championship game on Saturday, Nov. 19 at Scottsdale Stadium.
