Maddux to meet Cubs, withdraws from Red Sox

He is scheduled to interview with the Cubs on Wednesday.Maddux is over his bout with laryngitis and was scheduled to interview with both the Red Sox and the Cubs this week. But the Red Sox announced on Monday that Maddux was withdrawing his name. "Family matters," Maddux said. "We talked it over and decided the timing wasn't right for Boston." The Red Sox and the Cubs both asked permission from the Rangers last week to interview Maddux. At the time, Maddux had laryngitis and was unable to schedule an exact time for the interviews.
"I could give more reasons why an opportunity like this should be taken rather than not, but the reason for withdrawing my name from consideration comes down to a family decision," Maddux said in a statement. "My wife and two daughters are together in the same state for the first time in three years and words cannot describe my happiness. The game of baseball has many sacrifices, but being apart from family is the toughest. I feel there is too much distance between the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and Boston to see my family as much as I'd enjoy."
Dale Sveum interviewed with the Cubs on Monday and Maddux was his pitching coach during his short time as the Brewers' interim manager at the end of the 2008 season.
"He's a lot like me as far as due diligent work that he does every day," Sveum said. "He's one of the hardest-working coaches, if not the hardest-working coach in baseball and that's why he's put himself in this position to get one of these jobs."
"It's just nice to be mentioned with a Mike Maddux because he's a good friend of mine and he'll make a good manager someday, if not this year."
