Reds sign Navarro, extend Spring invitation

CINCINNATI -- The Reds on Monday signed veteran catcher Dioner Navarro to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training as a non-roster player in big league camp. Navarro, who turns 28 on Feb. 9, spent last season with the Dodgers He batted .193 with five home runs, 17 RBIs and a .276 on-base percentage in 64 games. He was released on Aug. 30. Before 2011, Navarro also previously played for the Rays and Yankees and has a .244 average and .306 OBP in 602 career games over eight Major League seasons. He was a 2008 All-Star for Tampa Bay and batted .295 with seven homers and 54 RBIs that season. Navarro has struggled around or below the .200 mark in each of the last three seasons. The addition of Navarro increases Cincinnati's Spring Training roster to 53 players. He will join veteran Ryan Hanigan, rookie Devin Mesoraco and veteran non-roster invite Corky Miller among catchers in Reds camp this spring.
