UC Irvine closes out Urban Invite with win

Southern University, Grambling State also record victories

UC Irvine had a close call at the Urban Invitational on Sunday, but it managed to gain a late lead and hold onto it in a 5-2 win over Texas Southern. Jordan Fox tripled and scored the go-ahead run on a bunt in the seventh inning, and Tommy Reyes finished with a career-high four RBIs.

The Anteaters only got eight outs from starting pitcher Andrew Thurman, and reliever Evan Brock wound up notching the win. Jimmy Litchfield got a key out with a runner on third base in the seventh. Reyes, the leadoff man, doubled in two runs in the eighth to provide the final margin.

Aaron Warren had three hits, a walk and two stolen bases for Texas Southern, and Lacy Jackson contributed a single and a run-scoring double to the cause. The Tigers got their first run on a sacrifice fly. Starting pitcher Denzel Pipkin worked five innings and left with a 2-2 tie score.

Southern University bests Alabama State

Southern University got an all-around effort on Sunday, when it scored in five different innings and held Alabama State to just six hits en route to a 10-2 victory. The Jaguars broke the game open with a five-run rally in the third, and three Southern players had at least two RBIs in the win.

Cameron McGriff had a two-run double in the crucial third inning, and Taylor Roy added a two-run single in the sixth. Southern starter Brian Foster threw six innings and had seven strikeouts and no walks. Bryan Rowry drove in one run on a sacrifice fly and another on a single.

Alabama State starter T.J. Renda worked three innings and was charged with six earned runs in the loss, and the road team's first run scored on a strikeout and a passed ball in the fourth inning. Freshman infielder Einar Muniz contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth.

Grambling State tops Prairie View A&M

Grambling State vaulted out to an early lead and weathered a comeback by Prairie View A&M to take a 5-3 victory in the final game of the Urban Invitational. Prairie View tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, but Grambling scored three straight runs and Derrick Murray got the save.

O.J. Simmons III had a four-hit game and drove in two runs for Grambling, and leadoff man Chris Wolfe came around to score twice for the road team. Pervis Mann worked into the fifth inning and walked six batters, but reliever Wilfredo Pallares got eight outs to take the victory.

Leadoff man Brandon Brooks had three of Prairie View's six hits, and he also accounted for two walks and two RBIs. Prairie View made three errors in the loss, and two of Grambling's runs were unearned. Starter Shaun Hollis was charged with three runs -- two earned -- in the loss.
