Hamels named NL Player of the Week

Cole Hamels' pair of overpowering outings last week has earned the Phillies left-hander his first career National League Player of the Week honor.

Hamels started the week with a seven-hit shutout of the Marlins on Monday, marking his second straight complete-game shutout. He then pitched a scoreless first inning Saturday against the Brewers to extend his scoreless streak to 23 innings, making it the longest by a Phillies pitcher this season.

Though that streak came to an end in the second frame, Hamels went on to allow just three runs over 7 2/3 innings en route to his 14th victory of the season. He also tied his season high with 10 strikeouts Saturday.

With the two victories, Hamels improved to 3-1 with a 1.38 ERA in four August starts, and 14-6 with a 2.94 ERA this season. He sits just one victory shy of his career-high 15 wins, which he set in the 2007 campaign.
