Winter Leagues: Abreu's slam sparks Caracas

Venezuelan Winter League

Caribes 6, Zulia 4
Zulia scored three times in the first inning but couldn't hold the lead as Caribes chipped away and eventually prevailed. The key was a three-run eighth inning highlighted by a two-run single by Niuman Romero and an RBI base hit by Gorkys Hernandez. Oscar Salazar added two RBIs for Caribes. Box score

Caracas 11, La Guaira 1
Caracas scored early and often and benefited from excellent pitching, including 4 1/3 one-hit, shutout innings by Victor Garate in which he struck out six batters. Bobby Abreu hit a grand slam, and Jesus Guzman and Alex Gonzalez added homers for Caracas. Box score

Mexican Pacific League

Mexicali 7, Culiacan 3
Mexicali ran its tournament record to 4-0 with the win. Former big leaguer Russell Branyan went 2-for-4 with a homer and three runs scored, pacing a balanced offensive attack for Mexicali. Gil Velazquez had three hits and Xorge Carrillo added two for the winning team. Luis Mauricio Suarez homered for Culiacan. Box score

Los Mochis 6, Navojoa 1
Los Mochis built a five-run lead over the first three innings and cruised to victory. Starter Marco Quevedo gave up one run over five innings and benefited from homers from Ramon Orantes and Yancarlo Angulo. Box score

Hermosillo 8, Guasave 3
Hermosillo scored seven runs in a three-inning span to take over. Former Major Leaguer Daryle Ward hit a three-run homer and Yunesky Sanchez added a solo shot for Hermosillo. Jesus Lopez had two RBIs for Guasave. Box score

Dominican Winter League

Licey 3, Aguilas 1
Licey took a 3-0 lead and held on thanks to a gem of a pitching performance from starter Yunesky Maya (six scoreless innings, four strikeouts) and five relievers, including closer Juan Cruz. Juan Francisco homered and had all three RBIs for Licey. Box score

Escogido 4, Gigantes 2, 11 innings
Run-scoring singles by Jorge Polanco and Eury Perez broke a deadlock in the 11th inning to give Escogido the dramatic win. Carlos Santana went 2-for-5 with a homer for Escogido. Box score

Puerto Rican Liga de Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente

Ponce 6, Caguas 1
Ponce built a 6-0 lead in the first four innings that turned the game into an afterthought. Raymond Fuentes had three hits, and Ivan de Jesus, Jonathan Mota and Jeff Dominguez had two apiece for the winning team, which got six two-hit, shutout innings from starter Logan Williamson. Box score

Mayaguez 3, Carolina 2
Randy Ruiz's RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning broke a 2-2 tie and gave Mayaguez the win. Irving Falu and Luis Figueroa each had three hits for Mayaguez, with Figueroa homering for the winners. Carolina starter Eliecer Navarro threw five shutout innings. Box score
