In the early going, Roy Halladay, the AL's reigning Cy Young Award winner, looked like he would extend his stellar streak against Detroit. The right-hander entered the game with a 9-1 record and a 1.51 ERA against the Tigers, and he started off by striking out three of the first four batters he faced.

He stifled Detroit until the fourth inning, when one swing changed the game.
