Royal rally stuns White Sox
With the White Sox leading by four runs in the bottom of the ninth, Frank Thomas looked across the field at the Royals' dugout and believed the game was over. The White Sox not only would win the 2004 season opener but also capture first-year manager Ozzie Guillen's first victory in his debut.

It took seven Kansas City hitters and six runs for Thomas to realize just how far off the mark he was with his gut feeling.

As Mendy Lopez prepared to pinch hit with the Royals down, 7-4, in the bottom of the ninth, manager Tony Pena's instructions were simple.

"Just go up there, have fun and hit a home run," Pena said -- something like that.

Lopez did, tying the game. After Angel Berroa singled, Carlos Beltran finished off the comeback -- and the game -- with a walk-off blast.
