On their way to losses in 11 of their final 12 Spring Training games, the Phillies had difficulty scoring runs, and managed two or fewer runs in eight of those defeats.

So it wasn't all that surprising that the regular season began in much the same way. Kevin Millwood (0-1) was saddled with the loss.

Kip Wells doesn't think of himself as a staff ace. But in his first career Opening Day start, he certainly pitched like one, tossing six scoreless innings.

Wells, who had a National League-best 2.12 home ERA last season, allowed five hits and three walks while fanning seven.
