Rangers get 'Byrned' in opener

The Rangers had what they thought was the formula for victory in their season opener against Oakland Monday night. But on a windy, 54-degree night, pinch-hitter Eric Byrnes drilled a two-run double off lefty reliever Ron Mahay in the eighth inning as the Rangers dropped a decision at Network Associates Coliseum.

What was shaping up as a nice little feel-good, bounce-back story for Jermaine Dye devolved into a same-old-story kind of thing for right-handed starter Tim Hudson. Dye's clutch hits were temporarily negated by Mark Texeira's seventh-inning homer, but it was ultimately a storybook ending for the Athletics and pinch-hitter Eric Byrnes.
