The heated battle for the Angels' final rotation spot came down to the last few days of Spring Training, with Ramon Ortiz convincing Mike Scioscia that Aaron Sele was better off in the bullpen. On Friday afternoon neither veteran looked particularly qualified for the job as the Angels suffered their first loss.

With Texas pounding out 18 hits and getting home runs from Hank Blalock, Laynce Nix and Kevin Mench, Rangers starter R.A. Dickey had plenty of ammunition with which to work. Texas broke it open with a five-run rally in the third, and ultimately scored 12 runs, the most Texas has ever scored in a home opener.
