Seattle sheds Padres' reign
Brian Lawrence struggled out of the gate, giving up three runs in the first inning. Dave Roberts all but erased that deficit with a two-run single for the Padres in the second. Roberts scored again in the seventh on an error but that still left San Diego short in its quest for a ninth straight win.

Richie Sexson doubled in two runs in the opening inning and followed Adrian Beltre with a solo blast in the sixth as the Mariners used those back-to-back homers to hold off the streaking Padres in Interleague Play. Gil Meche rebounded from a slow start and earned the win with six solid innings.
