The Cubs overcame a four-run deficit with six straight runs in their first visit to the Bronx since the 1938 World Series, but they couldn't fend off the Yankees. Todd Hollandsworth and Henry Blanco each drove in two and Jeromy Burnitz went 3-for-5 and scored twice.

Carl Pavano allowed six runs, surrendering a four-run lead, but the Yankees roared right back to claim the opener. Hideki Matsui drove in four of his five runs, including a two-run homer, in the seventh and eighth innings, and Alex Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
