Brandon Webb really wanted to finish this one. But when Mark Bellhorn and Dave Roberts started the bottom of the ninth inning with singles, Bob Melvin called on Jose Valverde to close it out. Webb improved to 3-0 on the season, allowing one run on six hits, striking out four. Johnny Estrada provided all of the offense that the D-Backs needed, doubling in the fifth inning, which plated Luis Gonzalez and Shawn Green.

Chan Ho Park pitched deep into the game for the Padres on Monday. Unfortunately, that didn't translate into a San Diego victory. The righty came one out away from a complete game, allowing four runs on nine hits, striking out four D-Backs. The Padres' lone run came via Mike Cameron's hustle. The speedster doubled, stole third, and then scored on Vinny Castilla's sacrifice fly.
