Beltran's homer leads Mets

Orlando Hernandez allowed one run on just three hits and a walk in his first complete game since September 2000 as the Mets opened the four-game series with a win. Every position player had at least one hit, Carlos Beltran hit his 15th home run, and Endy Chavez delivered three RBIs.

Claudio Vargas gave up five runs in the first three innings, then settled down to pitch through the seventh, but the Diamondbacks could not play their way back into it. Chad Tracy drove in the only run with a sacrifice fly in the ninth after Craig Counsell led off the inning with a double.
