Haren, Thomas lift A's
Red Sox can't sweep
After pounding out 18 hits the night before, Boston's bats were silent this time as the Red Sox lost to the A's in the finale of a three-game series. Right-hander Kyle Synder allowed five runs on 10 hits and two walks in six innings to take the loss for the Red Sox, who still won the series, 2-1.

Series at a glance:
A's take series finale
Dan Haren allowed only four hits and a run in seven innings to win for the first time since June 14, as Oakland salvaged the final game of a three-game set with the Red Sox. DH Frank Thomas supplied the offense, hitting a solo homer in the fourth inning and adding a three-run shot in the fifth.
