Brewers keep Cards skidding
Davis, bullpen team up
Prince Fielder matched a career high with three hits and hit his 21st homer to back starter Doug Davis, who allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings for the win. Five Brewers relievers combined to hold the Cards to two hits across 3 1/3 shutout innings, and Francisco Cordero earned his third National League save in as many chances.

Slide reaches eight games
The Cardinals' eighth consecutive loss hurt in more ways than one, as ace right-hander and losing pitcher Chris Carpenter left early with a bruised thumb caused by a comebacker off the bat of Bill Hall in the sixth inning. Held down by Brewers southpaw Doug Davis, the Redbirds fell to 16-25 against lefty starters this season.
