Carpenter, Pujols power Cards
Redbirds prevail in Game 1
The dynamic duo of Chris Carpenter and Albert Pujols proved too much for the Padres to handle in the NLDS opener, as Carpenter tossed 6 1/3 strong innings and Pujols broke a scoreless tie with a two-run blast. Jim Edmonds, Juan Encarnacion and Yadier Molina each collected an RBI.

Peavy struggles in defeat
Unlike last year's NLDS opener against St. Louis, Jake Peavy was healthy, but after cruising through three innings, he yielded three runs in the fourth, and the Padres couldn't recover. Held in check by Chris Carpenter, the Pads managed just one run, on Brian Giles' sacrifice fly that scored Dave Roberts in the sixth.
