Starting in center field for Rocco Baldelli, Elijah Dukes hit a solo home run in his Major League debut, but a 35-pitch first inning by starter Scott Kazmir caught up with the Devil Rays in an Opening Day loss to the Yankees. Kazmir left the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-run lead, but Rays relievers surrendered six hits in three innings. Carl Crawford and B.J. Upton had two hits each.
Derek Jeter singled to erase a two-run deficit, Jason Giambi had three RBIs and Alex Rodriguez went deep late in the Yankees' Opening Day comeback win. Starter Carl Pavano allowed five runs (four earned) in 4 1/3 innings, but the Yankees bullpen excelled. Johnny Damon left with cramps in his calves.
