Carl Pavano gave the Yankees their first quality start of the season, allowing two runs in seven innings and benefiting from a homer by Alex Rodriguez, who set a club record by going deep five times in the Yankees' first six games. Bobby Abreu had three hits and drove in four.

Making his debut with the Twins, Sidney Ponson allowed eight runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Yankees. The Twins' bullpen performed well, surrendering just one hit in 3 1/3 shutout frames, but the damage was too much to overcome. Torii Hunter collected a pair of hits.
