Peavy does heavy lifting
Five-run second plenty
Right-hander Jake Peavy was on cruise control, limiting the Dodgers to a run on three hits in seven innings. The Padres got on the board with a Brian Giles homer in the first inning, then got a two-run shot from Kevin Kouzmanoff as part of a five-run second inning.

Series at a glance:
Schmidt has troubles
It was one of those days for Dodgers right-hander Jason Schmidt, who allowed the Padres seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and two walks in just two-plus innings. The only Dodgers offense came on a Jeff Kent sac fly and a Russell Martin RBI single.
