Jason Giambi crushed a no-doubt home run in the top of the 13th inning to give the Yankees a satisfying victory. Spot starter Darrell Rasner pitched well after a shaky first inning, and seven relievers combined for 7 2/3 shutout frames with Brian Bruney tossing two scoreless innings for the win.
The A's bats appeared to be in fine form when Bobby Crosby and Travis Buck smacked RBI hits in a three-run first inning, but the offense did not push across another run in a loss to the Yankees. The bullpen allowed only one run in 6 1/3 innings to give Oakland numerous chances to break through.
