Gorzelanny strong in defeat

Tom Gorzelanny allowed a home run to the first batter he faced, but settled down to throw seven strong innings, holding the Cubs to just that one run. Unfortunately for the Pirates, their offense was held to only three hits by Cubs starter Jason Marquis.

Alfonso Soriano's 34th career leadoff homer was all Jason Marquis needed Wednesday. The right-hander tossed a scintillating three-hit shutout for his first complete game since Sept. 4, 2005, and the Cubs' first of the season.
