John Lackey had everything working on Friday in Arlington, coming within two outs of a complete-game gem. Lackey struck out seven, allowed five hits and walked three in 8 1/3 innings, while Gary Matthews Jr., in his return to Texas, had two RBIs.

Sammy Sosa picked the right spot to crush his 596th career home run, but it was too little, too late for the Rangers. Sosa's two-run shot knocked Angels starter John Lackey out of the game in the ninth inning, but the Rangers could not score again.
