Zach Miner pitched well, making an emergency start in place of an ill Mike Maroth, allowing the Red Sox two runs over 5 1/3 innings. But the Tigers were able to plate only one run against Julian Tavarez and they fell in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

Julian Tavarez did more than expected against the Tigers in the first game of a twin bill. He saved the bullpen by going seven innings, and while he was at it, he allowed Detroit just one run on four hits to lead Boston to a win.
