Mike Napoli hit a solo home run in the third inning while Orlando Cabrera capped the frame with a two-run shot to help lift the Angels past the Tigers. Robb Quinlan added a solo shot in the sixth to give John Lackey, who allowed one run on three hits over five innings of work, his seventh win.

Tigers' late rally falls short By Tim Kirby / MLB.com
The Tigers loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, but pushed just two runs across as Detroit dropped the series opener against the Angels. Magglio Ordonez hit a solo homer, but Mike Maroth allowed six runs (five earned) over seven innings.
