The Yankees used a big fourth inning to power their way to a series-opening victory over the first-place Red Sox. Jorge Posada went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Robinson Cano belted his third homer and Chien-Ming Wang went 5 2/3 innings for his fourth victory.

Wakefield hit hard in loss

Tim Wakefield was unable to control his knuckleball on Friday, and he paid the price in a loss to the Yankees at Fenway Park. Wakefield walked six and allowed eight runs over 3 2/3 innings in his sixth loss of the season. Kevin Youkilis picked up an infield single to extend his hitting streak to 23 games.
