With his team nearing its fourth straight loss and a few calls going the other way, manager Terry Francona had seen enough and was ejected for the first time this season during an argument with the home-plate umpire. Tim Wakefield was solid but picked up his fourth loss in five starts.

Joe Kennedy held Boston to two runs on seven hits in seven innings, and the offense gave him just enough support. All Oakland's runs came in the fourth when Jack Cust hit an RBI double and Bobby Crosby drove in two more. With Alan Embree taking a rest, Santiago Casilla worked a four-out save.
