Giants tread softly for big 'W'
Late small ball pays off
After Barry Zito's splendid seven innings, the Giants broke an eighth-inning tie on Dave Roberts' bases-loaded walk and Omar Vizquel's infield hit to snap their five-game skid. Barry Bonds, who did not start for the second straight day, flew out in an eighth-inning pinch-hit appearance.

Series at a glance:
Crazy eighth cools Cubs
This time, the Cubs fell victim to a late rally as Carlos Marmol, Will Ohman and Michael Wuertz combined to allow two tiebreaking runs in the eighth that gave the Cubs just their fifth loss in the last 21 games. Derrek Lee hit his eighth homer, and Ryan Theriot doubled and scored.
