Bats, 'pen write 'W' for KC
Royals take set from Sox
The Royals bunched all their runs in the middle innings, and the ever-effective bullpen made sure the lead held up. Ross Gload and Alex Gordon plated a pair in the fifth, and in the sixth, Gordon combined with Mark Grudzielanek and Billy Butler to put the team ahead for good.

Series at a glance:
Tough time for Tavarez
Julian Tavarez started strong but took the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) in 4 2/3 innings. He had a lead thanks to the smoking-hot Julio Lugo, but couldn't keep the Sox ahead. Manny Ramirez made it a one-run game with a homer in the fifth, but that's as close as Boston would come.
