Fausto Carmona gave up only two runs on three hits over eight innings, but the Indians fell to the second-place Tigers in the series opener. Carmona struck out five while not walking a batter, but he surrendered consecutive home runs in the fifth. Jhonny Peralta connected on a homer in the sixth inning, his 18th dinger of the season, but it was Cleveland's lone hit.
Jair Jurrjens, who didn't allow a hit until the sixth, yielded one run on one hit in 6 2/3 innings, lifting the Tigers over the Indians. Jurrjens earned his first Major League win in his home debut. Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen hit back-to-back homers in the fifth. Detroit moved within one-half game of Cleveland in the AL Central.
