Coming off his worst start of the season, Mike Mussina stooped even lower, lasting just 1 2/3 innings to match his shortest start since 1995. The Yankees pulled to within two runs in the third, but the bullpen couldn't hold the Angels as the Yanks lost ground in the Wild Card race. Alex Rodriguez homered twice.

The Angels batted around in the second and third innings, and Garret Anderson kept it going, doubling in the first and second before hitting a three-run homer in the third and a grand slam in the sixth to set a franchise record with 10 RBIs in a game. Kelvim Escobar won No. 14.
